I have it reserved and have been deciding if I want to download it yet. Most of the early reviews seem to be very positive. I might be one of the few people that actually like 8.1 so I havent been in a hurry to switch over. I might wait a few weeks to see if any problems pop up. There is supposed to be a major update in October as well.
I'm not in any hurry to get it. I don't really like 7, but I can live with it.
They aren't supposed to push 10 on you if you reserve it, but I'm not taking chances.
Besides MS stuff usually has some early issues that only get settled after a couple of service packs.
The New browser is called edge -- but they also left IE in there to handle some things that edge doesn't do ( yet).
Also, if you have Chrome or FF as a default, it will supposedly ignore that and make Edge your default. Changing that is supposed to take a fair amount of monkeying around.
I think that W8 was MS trying to be cool -- they shouldn't do that

This is honestly something that some jounalist deciding to make a big deal about that really isnt a big deal. When you install the update, it asks if you want to use express settings or custom. When you do custom it allows you to set all of your default programs but express sets everything to factory microsoft defaults. Nobody seems to complain that their brand new laptop doesnt have their browser of choice already installed and set to default, so I dont see what the big deal is about it. Although it is not as simple as it used to be set your default browser, it's not like it takes an hour to do it. You can find the instructions online and shouldn't take long at all.
Installed it on my laptop and it looks to be running fine. Had WIN 7 originally. Small hard drive and heard that 10 has a smaller footprint. Looks like 34.5 GB in the oldwin file. 18.2 GB in the win10 folder.
The only hiccup I have so far was needed new drivers for my sound card.
Were those available as downloads or you forced to purchase new stuff?
I hope to avoid Win10 as it sounds like something I DON'T want, in any form. I'm running Win7 and Win8.1 machines mostly because the Windows Media Center is available which I use to record various over-the-air broadcast TV shows---Win10 doesn't allow that program to run.
Good thing I keep my Win8.1 machine completely off the internet.
Tried to install it on my desktop.... got this Message:
"Couldn't clean up the Windows Reserved Partition" . As I have previously installed a 128 GB SSD as my "C" drive, the old partition for the "Recovery" for Win 7 is not part of that new "C" drive. I wonder if that is the problem? Can't believe that MicroSoft didn't that that into consideration!! Wait a minute... of course I can believe that.
Know two computer guys who have installed it and they both like it.
One thing to be very aware about it is that this version collects a lot of personal data from you behind the scenes. When you get to the window "let's set up windows 10" you will see a little gear icon in the lower left. When you look there you can turn off all the data collecting features and may want to do the same with Photo, Contact and Calendar which are "sharing" apps. Possibly one reason to be free.
They mention this in the contract where you say you agree so you need to be aware. When I use Google, who collects a lot of data, I never allow cookies and I never sign into Google.
