Hey guys. Back before I bought my Excursion, I was looking high and low for a 5.4 powered X, but they were few and far between. The few I saw were only 2wd. How many of you guys have one and why wasn't this a popular option? Was it supposedly underpowered for a beast like this?

Extremely rare, and therefore collectible, I believe. We have a member on here who used to own one, but now he drives a Chevy Volt.
The majority of 5.4 Excursions I have seen have been stripped out versions. They were suppose to be underpowered but I have never driven or towed with one so have no personal experience to base that on, just what I have seen here.
Most that went to .gov/fleets were 5.4 unless needs dictated a power upgrade. And most were 2wd as well. Alexandria, VA still has several in operation in the public safety departments. There is one at the station.
Besides Apocs, Iv seen one other 5.4 and it was even for sale at a local dealer. I woulda scooped it up if it wasnt 2wd. I believe it was even an Eddie Bauer.
I stand corrected! I just looked it up. The guy had it advertised on Facebook. 2000 ford Excursion Limited! Whew thatd be nice! Only 200,000 mi and asking $3800. Still 2wd tho...
I have a 2004 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4.
Under powered? Maybe. Depends on your use. It spends most of the time with just me in it (around town) and it works well for that. I have 6 or 7 people (2 in car seats) occasionally, and I have never had any problems or complaints.
I have also pulled a couple of different trailers with it. Nothing crazy. Nowhere near the rated capacity. I knew it was behind me, but it got the job done.
When I was first looking for an X, we drove one. My first thought was 'man this would be awesome if it had more power!' and 'this is slower than a Chevy Volt!'
I would think about how you're going to use it and drive a couple before you commit. Try a couple of the other engine combos to compare...
I drove a 4X4 5.4 X at work. This one had 200k+ miles on it but it ran good......That was it! It was a dog! Just made slot of noise! If I were unfortunate enough to own one it would have some type of supercharger on it, either a lightning setup or aftermarket!

Slap some 4.30 or 4.56 gears in her and it would be a totally different animal....
I just bought an 04 4x4 excursion xlt a couple days ago with the 5.4 and it's not going to win a race but it isn't horrible at all. It only had 50k on the rig so I had to buy it ... 😁
