Thanks! glad I found this forum, looks like a lot of info. I was looking at suburbans but once I got in the Ex I had to have one! There is just something about it....
Just don't get one, then pine away at wishing it was 2wd instead of 4wd, then complain about how it's not pure electric, then just buy a Jetta TDI because everyone says they are great long lasting, fuel efficient cars.......or some combination of thread/therapy session
Youll never see me complain about owning a 4wd, or in anything pure electric.
Im sure the 5.4 Exs suffer from the same problem V10 Exs do: not geared low enough. I owned a V10 powered F-250 ext cab short bed that I traded for the Excursion I have now. It would HAUL in stock form, but I was contemplating a 4.30 swap before trading it off. If I did end up getting one, theres a VERY good chance itd get either 4.30s or 4.56s. It certainly wouldnt be the fuel sipper regardless lol
I had a 2000 5.4 2WD Limited Excursion. Used it solely for travel along the flat, Texas gulf coast. It did what I needed it to do...haul family. I even got 15.5 MPGs a few times on the highway if I kept it right around 2000 rpms.
A friend once had a 2000 Limited 4x4 with the 5.4. I believe he still has it actually. Nice truck.
I did out drag him with my previous truck, a 98 5.4 Expedition EB 4x4 with 3.73's. We raced from a couple of stop lights. That being said, I always coveted having an Excursion, and now I finally have one of my own ha...
We've had a 5.4 xlt 4x4 excursion for over a year now. The 5.4 was sold to a lot of government agencies in canada. That is what mine was. ex police. Here there are a ton of super duties with that engine.
I have 4.10 gears, it's fine. No not fast per say, but it gets up to 60 mph just like anything else driven normally.
It's not the worst on fuel. I see 14-15 mpg quite frequently with combined driving.
5.4 Excursions weren't all that popular during the 2000-2002MY. Ford made more money selling the 7.3 and V10 than they did they 5.4. It wasn't until late 2003 early 2004 when gas prices started to go up, that more and more Excursions were equipped with the 5.4 giving the impression that it would "save gas" in such a big vehicle. They were mainly the XLS and XLT with the rare Eddie Bauer and Limited trim. They were also more available with 4wd and very rarely 4.10 gears.
If I had to get a gas truck for my wife or any other reason, I'd aim for the V10.
