Stock front and rear springs. Had to trim the forward edge of the rear wheel openings. And yes you are correct. 18 inches off the rear of the 8 ft box. It was bashed all to heck and then filled with bondo. I got a new sawzall years ago and decided to see how well it worked. I have a cherry bed for it but cant bring myself to install it yet. Still having fun the way it is now!
Still working on installing the new wiring harness...I've tuffed it out so far without a wiring diagram, just going off diagrams I've been able to locate on the web...I'm at a standstill though, so I just ordered a diagram mentioned in another thread...hopefully it'll cover turn signal wiring!! The diagram I've been working off of has different color wires listed than what's on my truck...anyone know what wires go where? I have 4 days off this week and would love to get this thing done...of course my diagram won't be here until Saturday(dang USPS)
I too am subscribing. Damn cool build for sure. My back
can just handle the ride of my stock/tight Bronk. I love
the fridge 4X4 but damn the ride on my 17 mile dirt road
driveway. Even my kids Civic kills me.
Thanks to the awesome guys at Rebel Wire, I got everything sorted out with the turn signals...on to the next snafu...pretty sure my headlight switch is bad, as it will only work if the rod is in a certain spot, and then only sometimes...so I ordered one from macs today, I'll keep yall posted when it gets here
How do you think the CPP box will hold up? I was going to go that route with mine, but CPP advised me that their gearbox wouldn't likely hold up in a 4x4 & 35" tire situation. I would love a bolt-on solution rather than fabbing up a custom steering setup.
Given my experience with runnin toyota's through the hills of West Virginia, I don't foresee any problems with the big tires(I know several guys who run 44's on the little trucks)...CPP's box is a " Toyota styled " model and I really don't see it failing...beware, if you have a factory 4wd, you'll have to find a 2wd steering shaft to fit into their supplied rag joint...the 4wd shaft is larger diameter and won't work, even with the help of a grinder (I found this out the hard way)
Snapped a few pics of some previous mods that I made to get the lift I needed in the front end...
Here's my front spring mount(you can see the factory one about 3inches to the rear). The shackle is from the '79 donor truck and was originally the rear mount of the front leaf...it's the same setup as the '59 uses only beefier...it was quite a pain using a hole saw to drill the frame rail to get them in
And here's the rear of the front leafs...also stolen from the '79, this originally mounted directly behind the front bumper if you're familiar, but tucked right into the front cab mount with just a small notch...the reasoning for the '79 spring mounts is that I wanted to use the newer, wider springs..mainly bc you can get lift springs for the 70's trucks...I went with 4-6inch lift skyjackers, we'll see how much they settle
Got the freshly rebuilt spicer 24 hung back in..thanks to trinity truck parts in Clarksburg, WV for their professional work..got the polyurethane bushings from summit...they have them listed for early 70's bronco, they're a perfect fit...as you can see, I've got a crazy setup due to the engine/transmission swap...wanna talk about a pain gettin that ujoint in between the tail shaft and input!!!
I went with LMc's c6 crossmember since the original one was all cobbled together by the previous owner to make the automatic work...it's a clean fit....due to my Lincoln engine and trans(wouldn't ya know '66 was a one year only C6 housing/case) I had to drill additional holes for the mounts...crazy M.E.L crap
Started the old girl for the first time on the new wiring harness...everything works just as it should...found a shop to ream my pitman and steering arm to accept the larger tie rod ends from my drag link kit, hopefully have them in by next weekend...I'd like to get some of your opinions on dual exhaust routing, I'm thinking about exiting in front of the rear tires, but I'm open to anything that looks clean...PM me if you have a good pic of yours
it's been a few days since my last post, sorry for the lack of pictures and updates...steering parts are getting reamed today, im here at the firehouse so I wont get a chance to pick them up until morning...I installed my electric fans yesterday with a kit from proform...they seem to keep that hot rod Lincoln cool on the garage, but we'll see once it gets moving...I've done some interesting reading lately on the HAMB about these MEL engines, and theyre quite the unique piece!!...apparently they dominated the NHRA and nascar in 1959...I know mine is a torque monster(factory numbers indicate 485ft/lbs) but it runs as smooth and quiet as you please at idle...anyone ever had one of these?
