Blocked / plugged vent tubes are messy! I once accidentally bent one over when positioning an engine transplant (trans jacked up too high and ran into the floor), but I didn't realize what had happened until I was out on the highway. It was like a Spy Hunter smokescreen, trans fluid pumping out the dipstick tube all over everything.
What trans fluid did you get? MERCON V? MERCON SP? MERCON LV? You must use the right fluid for the transmission, and in 2005 the Excursion could have one of two transmissions.
Gas engine trucks had the 4R100 and the diesel trucks had the 5R110W. The 4R100 used MERCON V and the 5R110W used MERCON SP or LV. Using the wrong fluid could destroy the trans.
Mark, probably a common stupid question but... I see DEX/MERC, DEXIII/MERCON types out there. Mercon V is available but looking for a 5 gallon pail I dont see it in the V. Which of the first 2 is compatible if any or should I just purchase by the quart? Thanks.
Ford used to have a spec for MERCON. That was discontinued in 2006. Now *ANYTHING* can be labeled as DEX/MERC or DEXII/MERCON. There is no specification and no control. So if you can tell me what's in those fluids I could tell you if they are compatible. All anyone knows about those is that the manufacturer says that they are for use in transmissions that used DEXRON or MERCON. But are they really? Who knows? I certainly do not. I do not buy any DEX/MERC fluids.
