i just bought a 1976 4x4 shortbed with a 360. it has an automatic transmission and what appears to be full time 4x4. i think it is a c-6 transmission. how do you tell for sure. i need to know because the shift lever does not have any definate stops between teh gears how do i fix this. and are all of these trucks full time 4x4?
no they are not all full time, an easy way to tell is if there is no lock out hub on the front axle (big silver cap on the front axle). to get it into 2h just pull the lever all the way toward the seat and then just give it a lite push to the front if you go to far it will go into neutral, the pattern will be from the seat forward 4 hi 2 hi neutral and 4 lo
i would bet a hundred bucks it is a c-6 with the 360 and 4x4
oh yeah no definite stop's between the gears on the transfer case?? probably means that it is a little worn and used quite a bit, you should be able to feel when you change the gear
the transfer case is alright it just has 4lo and lo lock and 4 hi and hi lock. the transmission is what does not have any positive stops. sorry i didn't make that very clear before.
yup thats a full time np203 tcase i have 2 of them both 76s with 360s. Ford only put C6s for automatic tranmissions behind the Fe engines. Somewhere along the line somebody has modified the front axle, because full times never came with lock outs but there are conversions kits. My dad always told me that unless the tcase is in lock hi or lo then it is in 4 wd but it will slip and is for the liter pulling and fourwheeling just thought id tell ya this.
by the way i thought id add my 2 cents on your 600$. I bought a 77 f150 Custom 4x4 longbed with a 400 V8 C6 NP205from a salvage yard w/o wheels for 550$. I got my dads 76 F150 longbed 4x4 with a 360 C6 NP203 Ranger XLT with all its chrome and emblems and hubcaps for free cause he didnt want it any more and i dearly love it. A few weeks ago ai bought a 76 F150 longbed 4x4 Custom with a 360 C6 NP203 from a neighbor for 40$ yes 40$ saved it from the crusher and it ran!! For being 18 and having 6 trucks all my own id say im doin pretty good wouldnt u? lol
i have a 78 long bed 2wd ranger that i am using the body parts from to replace the rusted out ones on the 76 the 78 looks pretty good i have owned it for 6 years now it just needs new cab corners. this is my first time in 5 years workign on a 4x4 so if i have some stupid questions you'll understand. i am use to working on my friends4x4 chevy. i am thinking of using the rearend out of my 2wd on the 4x4 they are both 9" but the 2wd looks like it is in better shape.
Welcome to FTE!!! Stick around and you will probably learn more than you wnat o about these Old critters. Right now I am converting a 71 with a 390 / toploader/4x4 to a 429 CJ/ C6/ NP203.
