Excursion broke down on the wife yesterday. She turned the corner on a (fortunately residential) street, and the truck died. Lost all power, steering and brakes. NOT A GOOD SCENARIO FOR ANYONE. She tries to restart, and the key just spins in the ignition without any resistance.
I figured it out and got it all fixed. Cost me $166 for parts and labor. This is a very uncommon problem. Is anyone interested in knowing the in's and out's of this failure and fix? I always put up lots of photos It will take me considerable time to put it all together in pics and such, so I want to gauge interest before I go to the trouble.
I'm interested, our key sometimes gets stuck, such that you can't turn it to start the truck. I've had this happen on other vehicles when the steering wheel is turned to full lock, but this isn't the case on the ex - it can get stuck even when parked on level ground with the wheel straight ahead.
I suspect the problem might be the same parts you had to replace....
I want to post a something to try if you have the ignition switch lock up on your truck. My excursion key wouldn't turn so i called a locksmith to come out and fix it. He told me to jack up the front end and see if i could turn the key and it worked. He told me that 90% of the calls he get for this issue tells the owners to jack the front end up to get the pressure off the front wheels and you can then turn the key.
Yeah, mine is fixed. The cylinder snapped in half inside the chamber it plugs into (manufacturing defect in the aluminum casting). I have all the pics for the write-up, but the tranny went out 2 weeks ago and I have been a bit pre-occupied with that.

No need to jack up the front end, this is a common occurrence that frequently happens when people have their wheels turned and they turn the key off prior to, or at the same time they release the steering wheel.
When that happens, the steering wheel lock kicks in, keeping the wheel from turning back, putting pressure on the steering wheel lock.
All that needs to be done is to grab the steering wheel and turn/pull the wheel back into the turn (the same way the wheels are turned) and that will take the pressure of the lock, allowing a person to turn the key.
Could not turn the wheel to unlock it no matter how hard you pulled. There was 2 of us pulling on the wheel and it wouldn't unlock. Jacked the front end up and the key turned like the steering wasn't even locked.
