Have another oil leak, just finished the pan flange gasket last weekend, made it 150 miles, now a new leak.
Took the spider out and everything on top, cleaned the valley up good, the fired the truck. HPO lines are good, but have a drip off the back and bottom of the HPOP, when I reach under it from the back, its right below the large 2 inch circle. Any ideas on what this might be? was thinking possible orings somewhere under there where it seats, but its been 6 years since I replaced all the orings, don't remember exact layouts.
Any help would be appreciated, have 36 hours to get it fixed and have to work tomorrow, wife needs it for her reunion Thursday, otherwise it would be a deal with it Saturday issue.
There is an o-ring on the rear plug that can be replaced without removing the HPOP. The non-serviceable one can not be removed without removing the HPOP. But it can be tightened - it just takes a lot of patience.
Thanks, I am remembering the "non serviceable plug" now. will have to find a mirror and get in there, but that makes perfect sense since I did re-oring everything when my turbo was leaking back in the day.
Trying to remember who has the parts to fix that, Diesel Orings? I have two complete oring kits, but of course not that kit...
I've had the non-serviceable plug leak twice in the past. I was able to tighten it up and stop the leak. It's not a permanent fix but it will buy you enough time till you have a chance to get to it later on.
heading out to pull the hpop since I do have the oring kits, think it will be faster to pull it, tighten, oring, and put back in. My gorilla hands with arthritis don't do fine patient work so well anymore.....
report back in the morning or tomorrow evening, have to leave for work in 7.5 hours.
thanks for the quick response, really appreciate it!
If it turns out to be the rear HPOP plug, be sure to use Loctite 680 with the o-rings. My first attempt was without it, and it failed within a few miles.
Like Rich said though, clean it up real well and you will be able to see where it's coming from while it's running. I found mine with white paper towels, inspection mirror and a strong flashlight. It could save you some time if it isn't the non serviceable plug.
I have it opened up, dried everything off, started up the truck. It is not the rear plug, or the "nonservicable" plug (I ordered one today just in case).
When its all dry, and I reach up under the pump, it is coming from where it butts against the reservoir front plate area best I can tell, kind of just seeps all across the bottom until it gets near the rear plug, then drip into the valley.
Yup, its the gasket. I tightened the two bolts holding the pump on a little, and it slowed it down considerably. Just ordered all new gaskets as well as new HPOP lines from Dieselorings, figure they will be the next thing to blow oil all over my undercarriage....... At least its not rusting underneath
14 years and 209000 miles is a lot i guess, shouldn't have to worry about it again for a while after this.
Finally had time to tear into everything this weekend. The culprit of the original leak was definitely the gasket on the HPOP, when i removed it there was no recovery in the rubber seals, they were flat as a pancake, same thickness as the metal portion of the gasket.
Since i was there, i also pulled the "non-serviceable" plug and replaced it with the longer one. Good thing, when i put the wrench on it, i don't think it took 1 ft lb of torque to remove, it was going to be my next leak. Same goes for the rear plug, almost finger tight. The ports for the HP oil lines were in pretty good shape, but I pulled them and replaced the orings both on the inside and the outside. Replaced my IPR as well since it is the factory one, much easier on the bench.
Also replaced both gaskets in the oil reservoir that feeds the HPOP and the oring in the top plug. Put new HP oil lines in as well.
Lastly, resealed the entire fuel bowl since it was sitting on the bench as well.
After about a 30 or 40 minute drive, all the air was out and running better than it has in a while it seems. Think the new IPr may be contributing to that, but who knows, just glad its not spraying oil all over now
