Unhappy 1992 F-150 E40D-ead!

Hey everyone, I have a 1992 F150 XLT with a 5.0 and the E40D tranny. It has 144K miles on it, bought it a month or two ago. It's always shifted kinda slow, like it would take forever to shift to the next gear. It also shifted hard sometimes. I didn't think much of it, transmission fluid looked brand new. Levels were fine. I was driving to AutoZone to go pickup a rad hose, and about 200ft after the light the engine just revs up and I loose all power to the wheels, like the transmission had just disconnected into neutral. Wasn't even driving hard at all, either. I pulled it over to a parking lot and got it towed home. Disappointing. Anyways, what do you guys think it could be? I'm clueless, I've been reading many different topics on this but I don't think they have the same issue as me. It barely moves when you put it in any gear, but the engine just spins freely. Funny, though. I did a short hard pull a day before it broke down. Guess that finally made it go. Anyways, I really appreciate any help I can get on this. Thanks!

Are you sure it's an E4OD transmission?

Most '92 5.0 were Speed density trucks, with AOD transmissions.

Do you Have the OD cancel switch on the shifter?

I'm pretty positive it's an E40D. The bolt pattern on the pan matches an E40D. It has the OD cancel button on the shifter.

Gear selection: P R N (D) 2 1

This truck is 4WD by the way.

My '94 Bronco used to have the same false neutral problem while driving down the road. The MLPS can cause this issue. It is the sensor on the driver's side where the shift lever passes through. There is a test procedure in a thread around here to test it and see if it is out of range. I have been fighting my own E4OD issues off and on for quite some time.

The truck will move if you put it in drive and pull the revs up high. It's not like completely neutral, it has the smallest bit of resistance. What would cause the MLPS sensor to fail all of the sudden? It was driving fine, then after the light it just let go. Sorry for all the questions, I'm not very familiar with these transmissions. Thanks!

The trans uses input from the range sensor, speed sensor, throttle position sensor and probably more that I'm not sure of to figure out how much load is on the engine and what gear to be in. Since I am having my own intermittent trans issues I am not the best to help figure out what is wrong with yours. There are test procedures to check out the sensors before just throwing parts at it. You can also check to see if there are any codes in the computer.

Don't do that... if it's a clutch pack that's slipping you'll burn it up quick, then it'll be rebuild time.

Water intrusion or just worn contacts. Or it ain't adjusted right.
