Hey guys, New user. I have a 1994 f250 with the 460 4x4 E4od trans. Im having some strange issues. Seems to have just started.
Truck runs great and i can cruise on the highway pretty well for about 10 ish miles. Almost everytime the transmission starts to act up. It will be in over drive that switch to 3rd, then back to od, then back to third. It will keep doing it until i press the OD lock out button on the shifter. After that point, if i stop at a light and go to take off, it will stay in first gear if the shifter is in drive. If i Manually shift it from first to second by shifter selection, it shifts just fine, no issues.
Ive checked the MLPS, cleaned the connections, checked resistance values then re-aligned it. Didnt get any better. I cleaned the Solenoid connector and again, no changed.
I ended up borrowing a Breakout box to hookup between the ECU and the harness. While drive the truck, i had the volt meter hooked up to an isolated ground, and to pin 19 which is the pin for shift solenoid 2 power. When the issues start to arrise, i notice that the voltage drops then comes back in, then drops and comes back in for the solenoid.
Could this be ECU related? Wiring Related? or sensor related? The transmission doesnt slip or anything and runs pretty dang good other wise. any suggestions would be awesome!
The only codes i had was one that periodically comes on which is the low egr flow. No flashing OD light, nothing. The needle seems to be right on point. It doesnt shake at all really. I ended up ordering a MLPS switch with the revision to the connector. Ill see if that helps. Otherwise, ill dig into the speed sensor. I do remember checking resistance and it seemed to be within spec also. Ill give the tps voltage a whirl too.
Also keep in mind that the solenoids are turned on by grounding them, and that 4th gear in the E4OD is achieved by turning both shift solenoids off.
So in 4th gear, you should see battery voltage on pins 19 and 52. When the solenoids are turned on, the voltage you see on those pins should drop to near 0.
thanks lead head! good to know, i forgot to take that into account. I swapped out the MLPS and speed sensor and all is good now. drove it and from work 4 days in a row now and put another 45 ish miles straight on it without any issues.
Mine done a lot like that and every time I thought that I had if fixed for several days (once for over a month), I would eventually get a disappointment because the problem would come back with a vengeance.
