I have a 1990 f150 5.0. Recently it would not start, it had been sitting for while. I did finally get it to start on starting fluid, it will stay running once you get it started but it runs rough and produces a lot of black smoke. I have changed plugs, cap and button, fuel pump regulator and the temp. control unit. it has 42lbs. of fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Any suggestions? Thanks Terry

Is the gas in the tank any good? You've got pressure but if the lines or injectors are clogged with varnish it will act similar to how you are describing. Fuel filter been changed recently?
When this first started the truck was about empty I added a can of sea foam and drove to a gas station and put gas in it. That changed nothing. I have wondered about injector(s) is there a way to test them?
42 lbs. Fuel psi when idling? If so, that's way to high for V8. It should be 30-32 idling, with vacuum line connected to FPR and psi should jump to around 39-42 psi with vacuum line disconnected.

This. Probably overfueling the motor, hence the black smoke.
There is 42 lbs. of pressure with the key turned on, not running. Another thing I have noticed is when you turn the key on you can hear the fuel pump kick on. However, it never stops. Shouldn't it stop after a few seconds? Thanks
Here's an update. Still won't start without starting fluid. A tune up has it running better, it idles fairly smooth and you can drive it. It will run down the road pretty good as long as you don't give it much gas. If you push the throttle down it backfires and looses power. Again, have changed fuel pressure regulator, temp. control unit, tried different distributor. Any other suggestions.
