I just got a 1996 F-250 with the 5.8 gas motor. It didn't run at all when i got it except off starting fluid and now it runs only if i pump the gas rapidly. It has 45-50 psi of fuel pressure and good compression on all cylinders around 150 pounds. Below is a start of what I have done.
Fuel tank (front tank, rear tank leaks and bad pump so I don't use it)
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
8 NEW injectors
new coil
new spark plugs
new spark plug wires
new rotor
new cap
New Muffler
The truck when it is running if i pump the gas sounds like it is running out of fuel but must be getting fuel since it has pressure at the shrader valve and injectors are new. I am at a loss what it could be since it is getting fuel and gas and has compression. Any help is greatly appreciated.
your fuel pressure is slightly above spec.
try pulling the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator. the fuel pressure should jump 5 - 10 psi when you do this.
so the fuel pressure did not jump up when i took th line off, i think the regulator is okay though because it doesnt smell of fuel or drip any. How do you test the codes on a obd 1? I also am going to try getting a computer from a junk yard tomorrow and put that in

The regulator is not okay. The line you took off is a vacuum line and will not have fuel in it with a bad regulator.
How did you come up with the fuel pressures?
You only have 40 lb spring in the fuel pressure regulator.
Sounds like low fuel pressure maybe from the bad fuel pump in the rear tank.
OR
If the fuel pressure is that high and this is not a 6 cyl you may have a pinched fuel return line.
Also try blocking off the EGR valve.
the fuel pressure is 35 pounds at the rail. But would the bad fpr cause the truck not start since i am getting fuel at the rail? I am picking up a different computer from a junkyard today to see if that is the culprit. I was thinking the computer could be bad and telling it not run right.
thats what i was assuming and the egr is good i held it open while trying to start end then even tried unplugging it and no start still. So I am trying a new computer today
