I've been trying to identify a strange clunk in the front suspension on my 99 F350 drw. It occurs only when turning nearly lock-to-lock in tight spaces, with the next clunk being when turning in opposite direction. Through a year or so I replaced pretty much all the bushings in the front as well as the entire steering setup (gear and all ends) as that was quite worn out and both sets of ball joints (bottoms were completely shot). Steering and straight line stability improved, but the clunk remained.
Since I was running out of ideas, thinking that maybe I would noticed something, I mounted a gopro to the suspension immediately under the driver side door, pointing at the front sway bar.
Nothing obvious from the clunk perspective showed, but I noticed that the left rear leaf spring hanger really moves a lot while driving. The right side doesn't appear to. Is this normal and if not, what's the job to fix?
Here's the video at the time of the most obvious flex:
Thanks, I ended up moving the camera to the other side but it doesn't look like the other one is moving at all. Either case, good to know. Back to the search for the mysterious clunk.
I think that your leaf spring shackles are working and moving normally.
However I am curious about the gap between the two leaves at that end's spring eye, your springs have a pretty good amount of space between the leaves there. Neither my stock front springs or the replacement X codes (with an extra leaf added) have any gap there at all. What is everyone else seeing at that location?
Here you can see how my spring leaves are tight together at the rear spring eye/shackle.
