I've got another question that seems related to this thread. The timing mark is extremely stable when I hit it with the timing light. The mark advanced with the throttle and returned smooth as butter. This would maybe indicate that the bushings in the distributor are in fine shape, or are fords just smoother. My experience with other makes is that the mark jumps or dances a bit, but not with this motor, I could read the lines on the balancer perfectly.

stable is good , normally a good sign of timing chain & gears in good shape etc

My brother and I both got a CRT performance set (dizzy and wires) off E bay and they've been great.

Interesting observation. After replacing distributor on the 64, the first noticeable thing, was idle smoothed out considerable, very nice overall bang for the buck. Another "wish I woulda done that a long time ago".

When running it up with a timing light to see the advance curve I could tell when one advance spring handed off to the other at higher and lower RPMs.
