I have a 1982 f-150 6cyl with a Duraspark electronic ignition. The control module is part number E1AF 12A244 AA. This module has the yellow grommet. Recently encountered the problem where applying the vacuum assisted brake will kill the engine and immediately afterwards it will not start. I did the tach test with a light and seems to not be firing. If I wait an hour or so it will start up and run fine. Doesn't seem like the vacuum for the brakes would have any bearing on the electronic ignition and whether or not the ignition fires. Any advise would be great!
I would agree with you that a bad brake booster shouldn't have anything to do with the ignition. I wonder if the ignition is so weak that it doesn't take much to kill it. And, it might be so weak that it won't show when you test it on the tach connection.
How about trying another test. Pull a plug wire and insert an old plug in the end and hold the plug, with gloves, to the block. Have someone crank it and see if you have fire in the plug and, if so, what color it is.
I think that I figured out what the problem was...only by luck or frustration! On the engine harness side of the 4 pin connector there are two green wires. one runs to the tach side (-) of the coil. The other green wire (extra) is several inches long and was connected to a male plug with a green and black wire leading from the firewall side. I had tested continuity, voltages, and resistance of all of the other wires. every thing tested fine, so i could not see a reason why the truck would not start. I really did not see what the purpose of this extra green wire so i unplugged it and the truck fired right up. I understand that this extra green wire and the two wires from the fire wall are for a tach which I don't have. The truck runs fine now. I guess maybe these were connected at some point and never caused a problem until recently.
