Ignition Module??

I have an 85 f150 w/351. the motor was rebuilt about 80k ago.
now...
The other day going to the store, the truck "skipped" a couple of time {almost like running out of gas} it was spontainious {sp} well, at the red light it just died...no sputter, just died. trying to cranks it, it turned over fine...but wouldn't fire, after about 10 min. it started firing...trying to crank...and finally did.
I thought maybe fuel flilter the way it was acting.
I was told that is was in the ignition system by another ford guy.
He told me to crank the truck at home, let it idol and it would die out if that was the issue. Sure enough agter about 5-10 min, it did.
The Ignition Module mounted on the dist. was the problem.....any one else experiance this and does this sound right?

boy...

Boy do I feel stupid...nevermind on the module.....after putting a new one on I found I had the same issues....come to find out, my neg. wire to my coil was hanging very loose. I installed a Tach awhile ago, guess it worked it's way loose with the extra wire in it. 3 days of cussing and freaking out....resulted in a loose wire

I've had trouble with that lead myself, but doesn't it change the reading on the tach? when mine would go out, it would flip the tach needle to the high end

The module on the 84-86 trucks is a problem because of where it is mounted on the distributor. They are affected by heat. I carry a spare plus the unique tool needed to change them for my 84 I6. Having been left dead in the weeds many times by this electrical device I finally got smart and carry a spare. I recommend the same for you. You can get a 5 year warranty module at some auto stores ($30$ last time I bought one) but keep the receipt.

I carry a spare ICM in both my vehicles.

For the picup, I took the ICM and the heat sink off a donor truck I found. Mine has the fender mounted ICM. I cleaned both the ICM and the heat sink, put fresh dielectric grease on the surfaces and assembled them with the special tool, then plugged it in and started the truck for a test.

If I ever have an ICM problem, I only have to plug in the replacement and I'm back in business... I hope

Talking

Yeah, I would have never thought about the NEG. clip working loose. Come to think about it, my TACH was doing some odd stuff every now and then.
I think I will keep my old Ign. coil with me since that wasn't the issue.
Props. to the guys at O 'reillys auto parts. I bought the Coil from autozone since they are right up the road....they never said anything about that "special" tool....I was cussing like crazy trying to get that little a$$ socket in that hole....
