Fuel Filter Replacement Steps

I am looking to replace the fuel filter on my 6.9L. Was wondering if anyone can give me a quick step by step DIY for this process. This is my first time replacing a fuel filter, don't want to mess it up.

-Thanks!

Not sure what differs between your 6.9 and my 7.3 re: the fuel filter (other than location), but steps are pretty simple. Drain filter via valve on bottom (not technically necessary but makes less mess), unscrew filter, remove water separator from bottom half, then reverse everything using a new filter.

If you want, you can fill the new filter with fuel to minimize the amount of air you'll need to purge, or put in some fuel treatment or ATF to clean the system. Just remember to fill via the OUTSIDE holes of the filter so the fluid gets filtered. FWIW, the first time I did mine, I didn't bother filling it. The truck only stumbled for a bit. This is back when I still had the original mechanical lift pump. Now that I have my electric one, no stumbling at all.

For the 7.3, I know there are several filter options out there that eliminate the separate water separator (1-piece design). It's not a bad idea because having the 2-piece makes for one more opportunity for air intrusion. If they make something like that for the 6.9, I'd do it.

Also, every once in a while these filters get on there so tight that it's a nightmare to remove. Mine was the first time. I found a YouTube video where a guy showed removing the filter using a leather belt around it as a strap wrench. Worked like a charm.

Don't forget to prime the filter with clean diesel prior to screwing it back on. I don't know how long you would have to crank to get sufficient fuel passing through the filter to get it to fire, but my guess would be a lot.

I also wrap the entire filter in a large ziplock bag so that it's not a mess when you remove it. I do the same thing with my coolant and oil filters during replacement.
