I am in the process of restoring my 1976 F150. Most of the body is in good shape but the tailgate is rusted beyond repair and the opening hardware no longer works. I have heard most of the aftermarket tailgates won't hold up. Are there any good aftermarket tailgates that will hold up? Can you still get a new FORD made tailgate from Ford or some other part supplier?
I assume a new tailgate comes without the handle and latching hardware. I can probably use what I currently have but I need to reconnect the two lateral rods to the pull (handle). I have looked at it and can't seem to figure out how they were originally connected. Will this become more obvious when I remove the latching assembly from the tailgate or could I be missing some parts that fell off or broke?
I've purchased a few things from Dennis Carpenters Ford Reproductions and have been very satisfied with the quality. Their catalog says they make tailgate repros from factory tooling. They also make the latching hardware.
From his website you can only order catelogs or download catelogs. Parts and supplies must be ordered via phone, fax, or mail.
He definitely has lots of stuff I need for my truck. Some small hard to find stuff and other big ticket items. Looks like a good soruce to me. Thanks for the tip Roscoe.
