So I am looking at a 2005 5.4l tomorrow and before I went to look at it I wanted to read up on it and I have heard some pretty serious horror stories. So I simply want to know how bad are they REALLY? Is this an EVERY single truck problem or a 1 out of 100? also what should I listen for? Just a basic tick? or diesel knock? Also is there anything else I should look for when test driving this vehicle?
Only have personal experience with one '04 5.4L 3v. Only regular PM (+ O2 sensors, VCT Solenoids). Over 200k mi and it has ticked and sounded like a diesel at idle every damn one of those miles. Countless people have asked me "What's wrong with your truck!!" But everything is still original and it's still running original alternator, A/C, water pump, PS pump, starter, idler pulleys and even serpentine belt - and it idles with good oil pressure on an aftermarket gauge.
If you read all over this, and other forums, you'll find 99% of the complaints center around the "sounds" the 5.4L makes - even AFTER many users replace all the timing components, they still make the same noises. You see very few that crater because of it. That's my 2 cents worth. I'd say base your decision on all the other usual things about buying a used unit.
Mine has been excellent. Only unexpected things were a starter and a blend door repair. If it has been well maintained I would trust it, if not I wouldn't.
2007 5.4L 3V. 131,000 miles. No noticeable tick or anything. Have never had an ounce of issues. I just keep it maintained well with frequent oil changes and filters using all Motorcraft products. Runs like new. It mainly just depends on how well it was taken care of.
