New heads for my 5.0
So I have a question I wanted to get a little extra power out of my 92 302. I have a buddy whose uncle has some heads for sale would I rather go for his slightly ported E7s or his Windsor sportsman heads?
Also what else could I do get a little extra power on a budget? This is a daily driver used for three miles one way and for fun ( a little offloading) so a crazy engine rebuild isn't what I am looking for.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
First start with a good tune-up MSD cap-Rotor, MSD Coil, Ford Racing 9mm plug wires and some good Copper Plugs such as Autolite or Motorcraft.
Make sure your timing chain does not have alot of slack in it...If you got over 100k miles then replace the timing chain.
Then Advance the Timing to about 14 degrees.
Exhaust on these trucks is restrictive and chokes the engine. Replace it all...I don't recommend Flowmaster Mufflers they do not flow very well. Replace the Y-pipe or have one custom fabricated...Shorty or Long Tube Headers...Long Tubes will give you more Torque but are not bolt on friendly.
If you have a automatic Transmission such as a E4OD I would recommend putting a heavier duty cooler in front of the radiator...Have the oil run through the radiator cooler then run it to the aftermarket cooler in that order.
Have you noticed I did not mention get one of those K&N hot air intakes...During summer time they suck to much hot air. I would keep the factory air box and then get the air ducting off a 4.9L F150...They are bent differently and have a slight ram air type design to them similar to the factory 5.0L... It goes between the rectangular hole to the driver side portion of the front grill next to the radiator. Although, when it is cooler out they do improve performance and sound of the engine is louder.
Explorer #19lb injectors. They have the 4 hole design that atomizes the fuel better. A little better throttle response and gas mileage. If you plan on cam and heads you might want to hold off on these because you will probably want #24lb injectors or bigger. Be sure to look into speed Density friendly cam if you plan on swapping it out unless you convert to mass air. Same for bigger injectors, "you will need to plan for mass air conversion."
Throttle body spacer = useless no performance gain that I noticed.
Under-drive pulleys are the best bang for the buck. Although, you will notice a drop in A/C and Alternator output.
Chip = "Pretty much useless." The ones pre-programmed really only advance your timing. Unless you have one custom programmed to support your mods.
Transmission shift kit. If your transmission shifts really soft like most factory E4OD's, "If that is what you have." Then I would swap those springs out to make it firm....Your trans will say TY!
Swapping out the Torque converter after you get some mods going will help also...Get one with a higher stall around 2400 and you will roast those tires and still have decent drive-ability.
Well there ya have it...
Other then that...I would plan to swap to a larger displacement motor like a 351W...Because most the things listed will swap right onto a 351W..
