HELP. engine swap questions.

ok so i have a 1993 f150 that I'm making my own daily driven rodder truck. its gutless. i want more power . i was thinking of rebuilding the existing motor and reprograming the computer or even swapping my base 180 horse 5.0 with a mustang 5.o, building that up and switching computers to handle the new found power...any suggestions about this would be appreciated. only mods to truck are air intake and true dual exhaust. just need to know the best route to go when u have about 2grand and less to work with

No that's not true at all, the computer does not in any way restrict power output it is actually programmed to make as much power as possible with what it has to work with... meaning the core of the engine. So all you got to do is let it breath and the computer will do it's best to feed that extra air with fuel.. up to the limits of the installed fuel injectors.

The only significant difference internally between a 5.0HO and the one in your truck is the camshaft so that is the first thing that needs to be upgraded, then the heads and then you will have to upgrade injectors and the computer to something that can be programmed. This topic gets covered a lot here so spend some time and read as much as possible, there is lots to learn and yes there is a lot you can do to your truck.

ok thanks. I'm on a tight budget but I'm trying to get about 250- 300hp at the motor. as far as the heads go are you suggesting new heads or just like porting the original ones. and the camshaft i saw in another post a b303...? I'm not great with the mechanical aspect of the automotive world, more into bodywork. would that b the ideal cam for the power I'm asking of my motor

The B-cam is ancient technology, there are better cams out there. Reaching that power level could easily be done by picking up a set of GT40 heads and intake from a 5.0 explorer, a solid cam shaft (call your cam company of choice with all your info as far as heads, gearing, torque converter, truck weight etc... and have them give you cam options to suit). Cam choice in a pickup truck vs a lighter vehicle like a Mustang won't be the same. Mustangs routinely put down 275 wheel horsepower with a GT40 head and intake swap and even an old off the shelf cam design like a B303 though. You will want/need to convert to mass air instead of your standard speed density so a computer swap will be necessary.
