I've got a line on a big six engine that could be a 240 or a 300.
As far as I know, the only way to tell which one is to pull a plug, put something in the combustion chamber (like a white stiff housewire) and measure the stroke.
It supposedly came out of a '66 truck and I believe that the 240 was standard with the 300 optional; sound right? The truck is long gone.
It's an hour+ away from me so just doing my homework before I go there. The seller is less than cooperative and says he doesn't have time to do the stroke check -
Looking at the picture, it looks like a 1 groove pulley.
Yes, I'm after the head and not sure what else; I'm rebuilding a EFI engine now to replace the tired one in my '85 F150. I want to build another engine for a hot rod truck as the next project so some 240 parts would be great.
I think I'll try and get him down on price some more and go look at it.
I made it back with my prize 240 engine. $100 + gas (~6 gallons), Not a bad score I don't think esp if the head is OK + whatever else I should want off of it. Now to build a dolly for it and roll under my workbench until I need it.
I see the oil pan is different than the two 300s I have (original in my '85 F150 4x4, the other a '88 I bought used). This engine supposedly came out of a '66 truck and was changed out yrs ago for a 289/auto. The truck is long gone; I bought the engine from the owners son who got tired of kicking this thing out of the way. He has some other old engines, but no Ford. I saw a 50s Olds engine and not sure what else.

Good find. Check the casting number on the head located under the thermostat. The third digit must be an "A" to be the smaller 68 cc 240 head.
Those numbers are very difficult to read, but it looks like "C6AE - ?" There also appears to be another number/letter on the other side of the head adjacent to the numbers above (if I'm making sense). I may have to pull the head to know for sure.
I pulled the valve cover and at the front just inside where the gasket would be is a "6C30". A round area with numbers is nearby and at the back is a large "A". I know the first two mostly likely are casting date codes; not sure about the big A.
The C6AE head is the smaller cc 240 head. You win!
WooHoo! Thanks for the decode help FTF!
I have a '88 300 I'm rebuilding right now that was supposed to be a "good used running engine" and has just been a money pit, but it should be on the up and up now.
I'm glad I finally got a good deal on one of these old engines - well, pending machine shop crack check, but I'm confident this time. No plans to tear it apart just yet; I'm going to just put it away until I need it fully assembled, altho I may pull the plugs and try to rotate and lubricate the engine and inside of the intake/exhaust ports of the head with some WD40 or similar.
Congrats, thought you wanted a 300. Silly me. Good luck with it!
I'm mainly after the head. Dunno right now if I need the rest of it, but I'm storing the entire engine under my workbench for the time being.
After I get the current 300 rebuilt and into my '85 F150 4x4, then the engine that's in there now will be built up for much more performance and the 240 head will be utilized.
