My cable on the positive connection on the starter side is deteriorating. The problems is that connection is a 3 point connector. I believe its the starter wire, the positive battery connection and the split off to the other drivers side battery is all in one spot. The starter wire is a thicker gauge. The post connection is breaking down everything else is good. I really don't want to buy a whole new cable if I don't need it. Wondering if any body has ever redone that connection point and how? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cables do age , get hardened, and oxidize inside the insulation, especially near the ends. This raises the resistance in the cable and causes voltage drops, and heat.
So, if you cut back the cable and correctly crimp on a new terminal or lug, it may be OK. Just be aware it may cause you grief down the road...
IMHO, new battery cables are cheap when you figure the job they do over the many years we depend on them and don't have to think much about them!
Try the salvage yard, these trucks are basically the same since 1999, and lots of parts will work on all years. Just bring your cable or take some pics to compare. You can also make your own that you can over engineer all you want. Go to www.remybattery.com and check out what they have.
I picked up my new one about 3 weeks ago from Tasca Ford. It was about $100ish. Not cheap but I figure if the last OEM one lasted 14 years I should be good for another 14.
