The other morning I started my truck (96 Ranger Splash - 3.0L V6 Auto) and just before I shifted into reverse to back out I noticed that the O/D OFF light was flashing. I tried turning hte O/D on and off manually but it didn't change anything.
I stuck it in reverse and my idle speed dropped from 1200 to 500 and the engine made a horible eradic/laoud noise and shook like mad. I imediately put it back in park and t4ried again with same results. I turned the engine off and restarted, this time there was no problem.
Later I checked in the owners manual and it said get service quick, and if it persisted I could do serious damage to the tranny.
Anybody know what happened? or what I can do? or how if I can wait or not?
The flashing OD light indicated a problem, the light flashes a two digit code which will help with finding the problem. If it happens again I would record the code and let us know.
My son has a 2000 Ranger, 3.0L, Auto, and he recently had a very similar problem: O/D light flashing, shifting hard or not at all, speedometer working intermittently and ABS Light coming on. The problem was a bad speed sensor which is located on the rear differential housing. Yours may be starting to go bad. You can try pulling the sensor out and seeing if it has metal filings built up on it. If so clean them off and reinsert the sensor to see if that fixes your problem. (The sensor is magnetic and metal filings can disrupt it's magnetic field.)
