Rear E-brake adjustment?

Well the e-brake is not holding, and I did a search and it seems to be a common problem. My truck is very, very, clean underneath. There is no rust, Texas truck.

The E-brake will barely hold in Reverse only. I found the oblong rubber plugs that are under the axle tube on both side, and I removed them to adjust the brakes.

The problem is you can't see or feel the star gear that is on the adjuster, all you see is a flat metal plate, which I assume is the auto adjuster.

My question is which direction do you turn the adjuster? If I remember correctly, you go UP to tighten on both sides? My truck is a 2000 F-350 Dually.

Is there a special tool just for these trucks? I don't think there is enough room for a normal adjusting tool. I have a small pry bar (5") that fits perfect, just don't feel the star.

They aren't auto-adjusting, at least the '01 and earlier version aren't, you have to do it manually. Best way is with both rear wheels off the ground, and I'm almost certain you go down to tighten. Try it and crank on the adjuster a little at a time until the tire won't move then back off a couple clicks.

Thanks for the info, Once you get the truck on jack stands there is not much room down there. I can try and jack it high enough to get my tall stands on the frame.

Go up on the driver's side, down on the pass side to tighten. Dont jack up both sides at once or you might have to chase her down the drive .

It should be the same direction on both sides since the adjusters are usually mounted in opposite directions. Meaning the star end would face toward the front of the truck on one side and then face the rear of the truck on the other side. I will try again today, I have been working on my chicken coop, and it is close to 100 degrees today.
