Hesitation

Hi all, I have a 52 ford f1 with the 239 flathead in it. The engine was rebuilt about 3 years ago, but was left a 6 volt system from the previous owner. I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor, upgraded to pertronix ignition, plugs, wires, and coil. Also, the PO hooked up an electric fuel pump instead of the mechanical for one reason or another. The problem is there is a hesitation when you hit the throttle, which makes for a pain in the rear end to drive. Every time you start out or shift and give it gas, it hesitates or stumbles before it responds. I have ran seafoam and marvels through the fuel, nothing I've done has made a difference. I'm assuming that the problem is probably carb related, but I am new to all this stuff. I know the basics, but am really trying to learn how to care for this truck on my own as much as possible and learn it. Can anyone help point me in the right direction on this? Im also not very familiar with tuning carbs, i believe it to have a Holley 94 on it...would love some help!

Thank you so much, I'm so excited to own this truck and join this community.

It sounds like your accelerator pump isn't working. See below. The link from the throttle shaft to the accel pump shaft can come out of the holes in the throttle shaft, disabling it. There are 3 positions, the middle one would be the best for now.

Look down the throat of the carb, and operate the throttle. As soon as you move the throttle, you should see gas shooting out of two nozzles. If there is a delay, or no gas squirting, the accel pump isn't working or the nozzles are clogged.

PS on that linkage and the pin on it; if it becomes disengaged from the throttle, it can jam the throttle open!!

Well I checked on that linkage and all appears to be acting normal. I went to go drive it today, let it warm up and pushed the choke in. Made it down and road and when I stopped at the stop sign it stalled. I was able to get it restarted after about a minute and was able to operate the truck normally, but with a little bit of choke during the duration of my trip. I got to my destination and left the truck running, pushed the choke back in and it purred like a kitten and ran fine the rest of my trip. I am stumped.

Have you taken the carb apart? It may just need junk cleaned out of it.

Have you adjusted the idle mixture screws?

Hesitation

Just wanted to post an update on the hesitation. There was a bunch of air getting into the fuel from before the fuel pump due to a bad clamp. I fixed that up, and now it seems to be running much better. Something so simple can have you scratching your head for hours.

Mine was doing the same thing, 54 model 239. I rebuilt the carb, which includes a new accelerator pump, and now its runs great. Kit isnt that expensive and worth getting rid of that headache!!
