Engine rattle after oil change

I just bought a 66 f100 that has been sitting for 14 years or so. The oil filter had 7-7-2001 on it so the oil is damn old. I bought two filters and some $2 a quart oil. I changed oil and plan to change it again after an hour of running the engine. The filter is horizontal so I couldn't pre fill it. When I started the engine it made a rattle for a second and I shut it off. I double checked everything and started it back up and it was fine. Can I get a different filter boss? Does this happen to everyone? I think it's a bad design if you can't prefill the filter.

Just to clarify, I'd like to change the filter to an upright style. Also what weight oil is best in a 352?

Dot, I imagine the startup after a long rest had a lot to do with the noise. There are no known issues with installing dry horizontal filters to FE engines that I am aware of. I have been doing it for near 50 years. and did it the last time I changed oil in any of my Ford vehicles.

That engine was designed to use straight 30W non-detergent oil. My engine has been rebuilt and I run store brand 10W30 oil and Motorcraft filters. I do no think the more expensive oils with additives are necessary, but you are welcome to spend your money on them if you wish.

That engine may be in need of a rebuild, and the reason it has sat for 14 years.

The original 65 4x4 352 comes with a vertical oil filter mount. They were made not sure what all you will find them on.

This is the filter housing you are looking for. Im not sure what all vehicles they were on. This is in a 4wd truck. Maybe Bill ( NumbersDummy) will see this and chime in on your availability of this type of filter mount.

Also I only drive my truck thru the summer months. I tend to use a heavier oil such as a 20w50 and I add lead substitute to the oil. The motor I have in my 65 was rebuilt over 25 years ago when I bought my 65 2wd for parts. Im not sure if the newer valve seats were put in it so that is why I add a little lead to the oil mix as the new oils do not come with it. Castrol GT is the brand I use. I see where some are using a diesel mix oil as it contains lead but it might be much more expensive. I have not checked on that myself.

I started it a dozen times with no rattle before the oil change, and many times after. It was just while it filled the filter. Can the oil pan be taken off without lifting the engine?

On the 4WD trucks you can leave the engine in place. For 2WD you will likely have to raise the engine some. Remember, it's not just the pan itself but the pickup screen/tube and pump inside that you need to clear to get the pan all the way off.

You might look at getting the four volume service manuals. They are what the service techs at the dealerships used for reference while working on these vehicles when new. I find them invaluable. Hints, tips, special tools, procedures. It covers just about anything a person would need to know. And, yes, it covers how to remove the oil pan.

A little rattle in the valvetrain after an oil and filter change is not unusual. It shouldn't hurt a thing for a second or two. If you have manual valves you can get a rattle just by adjusting them and it doesn't hurt a thing. There are vertical filter mounts, though, so you can orient your filter vertically if you prefer to.

NumberDummy wrote that the reason they went with the horizontal on the trucks was if a motor mount breaks it can smack the vertical filter against the engine member and crack the filter open. The horizontal gave more clearance so if a mount breaks the filter shouldn't hit anything.

I think the most trouble free fix for you is to not worry about it. When you change the oil, take the coil lead off the distributor cap and spin her over about 20 seconds or so...maybe twice. This lets the oil pump.....pump up the system.

All (or at least pretty much all) of the passenger car FE engine oil filter housings were mounted vertically because they had no clearance issues. If that's what you want, just find a car FE engine and cannibalize. You'd probably need to use a shorter filter. However, as TA455HO and Number Dummy have pointed out, there are potential clearance issues which could have catastrophic results. Another option is to use a remote filter mount kit and put it where you want it.
