My son and I just bought a 1993 1 ton pickup with the 7.3 l diesel engine. We try to rebuild this truck to make it as close as possible to new. We are currently working on the engine (has 150 k miles on its back). We replaced the glow plugs, the vacuum pump, and the fuel filter and made sure that all lines and hoses are OK. We ran into a problem that we have no explanation for (hopefully you have one). When we try to start the truck first thing in the morning, it will not start (with the glow plugs on as required). After spraying a little starter fluid into the air filter it will start. Once it started that first time in the day, all subsequent starts will be without any problems, until it rested for the night and the entire hesitation will be there again.
Can anybody here direct us into the right thing to do to overcome this problem? Any help will be appreciated very much!
Try replacing injector return lines... they sell a kit st the parts house don't use the o rings that come with the kit use viton o rings 111 available at McMaster carr. Sounds like you have an air intrusion issue with allows fuel to drain back to tank instead of staying in the filter.... to prove this let it sit over night and the next morning before start up spin filter off and see if it is full... also injectors don't like to pop off when there is air in the lines. Also there does not have to be a leak to suck in air. Also if it is hard starting first start up of the day try cracking all the injector lines until diesel bleeds out of them then you know all the air is purged. One more thing cranking speed is important! ! Fresh starter and fully charged batteries are a big plus. .. TJCTRANSPORT has a video on here the difference between a failing starter and a new one.... post some pics of your projec :-).
What brand of glow plugs did you use?
Motorcraft/Beru plugs are the only good brand to use on these trucks. I would read the glow plug sticky thread and fully test out your glow plug system.
Also DO NOT use starting fluid on these engines without disabling the glow plugs. Otherwise you may permanently damage the engine. If the glow plugs are cold, a small sniff of ether is ok, but only if the glow plugs are cold.
Thanks for the info. We have replaced the starter already and keep the batteries on a trickle charger. We have to look through your recommendations to see if all those parameters are OK.
what brand glow plugs did you put in it? if they were autolites, i got money that says they are burned out already.
motorcraft ZD-9 are the only glow plugs that work in these engines.
