I've been a truck driver for over 10 years.. the 6.7 fan is quiet compared to some of the trucks I've driven..I actually like a noisy fan.. that way I know it's doing its job.
It does that because either your oil or coolant temps tell it too.
When my temp guage starts to go to the right of center it will come on full blast.
I think around 225F.
This only happens for me when pulling pretty heavy up grades.
Had mine kick into high 4 times on my trip back from upstate NY back home towing my 5'er. First time I ever heard that loud roar! It scared the hell out of me, I thought my tranny was slipping or something. My tach and turbo all apeared normal, I didn't know what was going on. And yes, it happened each time going up the hills of eastern Kentucky, so I thought maybe my tranny fluid might have been a little low (even though I checked it every day on trip) and it wouldn't shift when it wanted to. After the third time, I had switched to digital temp, and sure enough as soon as the oil temp hit 229* the big roar started. Thats when I fgured out it was the fan
Senix - I'll take your word for it. But sub zero to low teens on the highway ALL of my temp gauges never move off of cold. If I am in city driving, they'll go up a bit and as soon as I hit highway speeds they are back to cold...
Maybe going slow with a heavy load. I haven't pulled with this truck yet and not in cold weather. I have had my previous truck NOT pulling or hauling anything other than me, in hot weather on flat ground turn the fan on....
