There is a fan that kicks on when my truck gets hot, usually when towing up a grade in the tow/haul mode. The same fan also starts up when braking down hill with my trailer in tow. What is that fan ? That same fan recently had a squeal sound when I had a long uphill grade- it was the first time that I heard that. When the long hot pull was over, and the fan came on again, either up another grade or while braking, the squeal was not there....
Mine sounded more like a bearing squeal. If I stepped harder on the pedal it got louder. It was a long uphill pull and my trailer is appx 9K lbs. The weird part is it didnt happen again.
if the squeel happens only when the fan comes on then you most likly have a failed belt and tensioner. also look at the water pump pully if the center were the belt rides is all silver and not black the pully should be replaced at the same time.
also you need to look at what ect/eot are doing before you wind up with issues caused by a possible pluged oil cooler.
My squeal or whistle was definately an electronic type noise wondering if the transistors in FICM could be making the noise considering after replacing the noise stopped..
the fan you hear is the radiator fan clutch locking up to give maximum cooling and is putting a load on the belt, causing the belt to squeel or putting a load on the tentioner and the bearing is squeeling.

its not the bearing at all. its the belt slipping under full load of the fanclutch. this happens when the backside of the belt (flat side) geys worn do to a failing tensioner. as a result the water pump pully becomes polished and will nolonger maintain traction with the belt.
Mine does that as well only when towing uphill, but mine sounds more like a high pitched whine, almost like a radio frequency, could that be the belt and tensioner?
