HI All and thanks ahead of time. My 2007 6.0 has 122k miles so far so good. Last week after driving home on a long trip we made a brief stop at a fruit stand and when I tried to start again it would start, then stutter and die. same thing many times start and immidiatly die. seemed like fuel problem had it towed home. changed upper and lower fuel filters. It started right up. Wife gets in next day. starts right up. She drives it to do some errands. after running around town a bit, same thing starts then dies. I need to mention its been over 100 degrees here. towed home again. Checked for codes no codes have been thrown. get in next day starts right up. starts after coming home from work. Take it for some running today, It is still around 100. After stopping at several places it starts doing the same thing. starts shudders and dies. i checked fuel pump connections banged on pump.NO go. I then went to check to see if there is fuel in upper bowl,full, put cap back on. Starts right up! Drive home. try at home, starts dies.. Take the cap open on fuel bowl. Starts right up! What the heck is going on??? Any ideas???
Can you provides some live data info.... needs 500+ psi to start. Need ICP while cranking and at idle if possible. IPR % would be good as well.
Sounds like a HPO internal leak. STC fitting probably, could also be dummy plugs and stand pipe. When the oil heats, the leak is worse, cool oil is thicker and is easier to build pressure with. Why it sits for a bit and then starts and runs a little bit.
Listen for the fuel pump to run, about 20 seconds. Check the oil filter and cap, should be OEM.
Sounds exactly like one of the issues I had. By any chance did you hear a vacuum noise when you popped the upper filter loose? I did when I popped the upper filter housing. There was a 1/4" of fuel in it. The pump did not come on at that time. I beat on it and it started running.
Thanks all! I did get a chance to do some minor checking. I can hear fuel pump and Upper fuel bowl appears full. I went away for the weekend but now I can check ficm voltages. Excuse my ignorance but I am not sure what the acronims are
ICP=Injector control Pump?
IPR= Injector pump regulator?
HPO=High Pressure oil?
STC=?:
ICP should really have a S on the end (but it don't) Injection Control Pressure Sensor.
IPR and HPO you got right.
STC is Snap To Connect. Commonly referred to on the 2005 and newer trucks because they often fail. It's the fitting that goes on the output of the High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP).

Reason: Corrected year
Thanks for letting me know what that stuff means. Now all I have to do is find them. LOL. I checked ficm voltage tonight and I think that is fine (at least now)
I have 48 + volts key on engine off and 48.66 volts while running. Again after sitting all weekend it started right up. Uggh. Thanks again all for your help!!!
Rusty, the links you provided are an amazing resource thank you so much!
I now understand how the fuel and high pressure oil systems work together.
Anybody that does any of their own work on a 6.0 should look at these links.Thanks also to who uploaded them originally!
