crank pulley removal tips?

I'm trying to pull the crank pulley off a 300 i just got today. I got the big bolt off but the pulley won't budge. Any tips on loosening it or the correct puller to use? I don't want to screw up the threads on the nose of the crank.
Thanks,

Carl

Sounds like you're trying to remove the harmonic balancer aka crankshaft damper. They are a close, tight fit and can be kind of a PITA.

You want a damper puller. Usually parts stores sell them or will rent them. It helps to use good quality bolts and hardware as the force required for removal (and installation) is pretty high. Cheap crap will tend to break, often.

If you look on the damper itself there should be two threaded holes for installing the puller. The puller will have a bolt that rides on the crank snout and by tightening the puller, forces the damper off, slowly. Make sure nothing will interfere with the damper (engine mount bolts, brackets, etc) before getting started.

I know oreilley's puller works pretty well.

The crank pulley on the 240/300 is the harmonic balancer. You need a harmonic balancer puller to get it off.

Before you try to use the puller, reinstall the crank bolt without the washer ( finger tight is fine ) .

When you do get the balancer off check the area of the snout where the seal rides. If there is a groove worn in it you may have to install a repair sleeve on it, before you reinstall it.

Also - with things like this and steering wheels, it's a little counterintuitive but try tightening it a bit (helps to break the seal) and hit it with penetrant.

This is something I wish I had thought of before I did mine. It only took a couple turns of the pulley before I realized my mistake. It took over a week to track down and order a tap that was large enough to fix the threads, as no one kept it in stock.
