Hi everyone. Im new to these truck, just but one yesterday actually. I have lots of questions, but I haven't found the answer by searching. I have the 3 speed manual that was converted from column to floor shift by whoever owned it before me. The problems I'm having are that there is a general looseness to the shifter, and if I push it up into 2nd too far it grinds the gears. Any more info you need or anything I can check? I'm a decent mechanic and I repair cat engines daily... but the workings of a transmission are just about brain surgery to me.
having similar problems with my old column shift but in 3rd. hoping for some options.
For you I'd start with the shifter linkage. The kits to convert these were usually a little sloppy, and you may just not be getting enough throw to engage second. I've heard of guys having to notch their seat or dash to get enough throw to grab all the gears reliably.
For me I've already gone through the linkage, and no dice. looking maybe rebuild now, time for all day research session...
I have a feeling it's just a really cheap kit. I would like to replace it but I can't find the right kit to use. It's really confusing trying to figure out what this transmission is in the 1st place. Ultimately I would like to drop a c4 or c6 in.
Grinds gears huh? Have you tried adjusting the clutch? "3 on the tree" is notorious for being worn out early in life. Insp pedal bushings, linkage ect...
Have you used the Advanced search?
Do you see the blue line with User CP, Albums, FAQ? See the SEARCH on that line? It has a drop down search menu arrow, go to the "Advanced Search" option, top left side (search block) type in there what you are looking for and then go to the lower right column and highlight 73-79 forum. Select it and then you will have a detailed search just in the 73-79 forums.
Sorry I haven't responded. Working 6 days straight and working on a house addition tends to take up my time. I have gotten used to driving it so it's gotten better. It still pops out of second, and now the truck shakes pretty violently when taking off in 1st and reverse. Found a lot of info on that and seems to be fairly common. I'm hoping that early next year I can get the Trans and engine rebuilt and go from there. Anybody have a suggestion on a good floor shifter though? I can tell now that a lot of the issues are excessive play in the shifter and it feels pretty cheaply made...
