PCV change 351 - easiest thing I've done

I have a leaking rear main and I was told to try to change the PCV to make sure that wasn't causing it but I read it was a real pain. I can do some stuff so I thought id try it and Ill tell u what on my truck it was so easy it's laughable. Literally a 5 min job. I don't think my old one was bad but maybe the 5.0 is way harder to get to but man was mine easy

Some think its hard, since they can't see it.

Maybe the previous owner re located it but mine was in plain view. Right there at the back of the intake. I could see and get at it easily though

The hard part is replacing the grommet- it is at the end of an elbow, and underneath the rear corner of the intake upper plenum...

I didn't replace that. Is that necessary? I didn't have any codes or it isn't running bad but I replaced the pcv because I read to try that if the rear main is leaking first to see if it makes a difference

t this point, if it has never been changed, YES- It is a place oil can leak out: The rubber by now will be kind of spongy, and you'll have PCV vacuum leakage there...

It can be done with the plenum in place- BUT- I recommend picking up a grommet (HELP! aisle at the parts store, on one of their little red cards) and the UPPER PLENUM gasket: it is only a dollar or two, and removing the plenum. It is very little trouble, and allows you to clean up the valve cover, as well as any other crud on top of the engine at the same time...

Below is the 5.8l (351W) which is nearly identical to the 5.0(302), and you can see the PCV arrangement at the back left corner)

Oh how I hate that upper intake... can't clean the mud/dirt/leaves/junk off the one side of the engine none too easy. Makes me wanna rip out the EFI and put a carburetor on it. No actually three of them so I can have a TriPower 351! Bahahaha... oh wait I have E7 Choke-O-Magic heads... never mind. It wouldn't do a damn thing stupid E7 heads...

Seriously though yeah I've tried to get to mine and it didn't look fun w/o removing the upper intake. The hose was squishy so I left it for another day. Good to know it ain't that bad but I'm still gonna yank the intake anyway. I think I have a vacuum leak somewhere (besides that PCV hose) and I'm determined to find it cause I lost like 2 MPG's lately.
