I'm hoping somebody here can offer me some kind of assistance with replacing the accelerator linkage on my 86 F-150. It's a 300-6 with a Carter YF, I went out and bought the 30" Cable from Advance Auto, compared it in the store to the original, and then attached everything in the engine bay. However, the problem arose when I looked under the dash to connect the cable to the gas pedal, and realized that the cable was about 1.5" too long. It may sound like a stupid question, but is this ATP replacement cable adjustable? I'm just starting to learn about these old trucks. I've replaced cables before, but I've never really spent much time around a carburetor fed engine. What am I missing here?
Yes, it mounts to the engine side of the firewall. Some of that after market crap is just not correct. Did you double check the length with them both out of the truck. You may not want to do this, but some of the guys will add wire ties to take up the slack. Not what you really want to do, but it will get you driving until you figure something else out. Oh ya, wire ties by the pedal, not the carb.
I did check, they appear to be the same length. The one that was on there only worked because somebody was running it with the outer tube on the end broken off inside the spring. Every time I would press the pedal, it would kink the cable and spring in a u shape. Accelerating sounded like using a ratchet. I am curious about one thing that I've noticed. My carburetor is, as far as I can tell, a Carter YF; however, I haven't seen a throttle lever like the one on mine on a single other YF I can find on google images. All of the ones I see have what I refer to as the 'pull tab' on the drivers side of the carburetor, mine has a hole with a bolt through it, no remnants to indicate there used to be a pull tab.
Here's the two best pictures I could get of my throttle lever, apologies for my fat fingers being in the way on the second one. You can imagine the angle I have to hold this camera at to get that picture with the carb still attached.
