Hi guys, I have Hughs performance built transmission in a 460/f-350 with a 2000# slide in camper, the trans has a large aftermarket cooler, and a deep transmission pan for an extra couple qts of atf last summer pulling a long grade , the input seal on the trans blew I shut it down in plenty of time had it towed and and repaired, it was recommended I install a temp gauge, I did, autometer.
Pulling a different grade this spring, I got the trans temp up to 260-280 and got a little nervous , cruising temp is 150-160 and I wasn't towing atv's this time.
After all that, what more can I do to keep it from overheating ? I'm thinking if I put too large of cooler it would keep it too cool just cruising.
Put the biggest baddest cooler your pocket can afford.
Don't worry about it running too cold unless it is -40.
In that case you can install a bypass system for cold weather driving.
First, where is the temperature sensor? There are places that some people mount the sensor where 260-280F is normal.
Do you have the radiator cooler in your cooling circuit? If not, you need it. Depending on what aftermarket cooler you have you may need to replace it. Some of them are junk. The best cooling system you can get is to go from the front of the trans to the radiator cooler, then to a cooler from a 6.0L truck, then to the rear of the trans.

On the e40d there is a 3/8 [i believe] plug right above the forward end of the pan , was recommended.
I'm thinking a larger cooler as recommended above can't hurt. This is the original aftermarket cooler with about 50k on it, Don't know why they would clog up but you never know, probably a pos . The radiator is not plumbed for a trans cooler, I know that would help, but I think a larger aux trans cooler would be cheaper than a new 4core radiator.
That's a good place for an accurate temperature. The thread in that port is 1/8" NPT. That's also what most senders are, so they fit fine.
You're right, it will be cheaper, just not as effective.
BTW.. I "assumed" the radiator was not plumbed, well it is. So, I'm going to look at the transmission lines in the next couple days to figure out how to incorporate the radiator cooling ports, I do believe both should be sufficient.
Also, the aux cooler that is on the truck is no piece of junk. 10.5x12x11/2"
Still the best way is what Mark is suggesting... thanks again guys

Proper flow is.
Transmission to radiator to external cooler to transmission.
holy crap that's hot.i wouldn't have ever let her climb that high.you were not even towing anything? the line that comes from the front of the trans, should go into the radiator.out of the rad into your aux.out of your aux, into the rear of trans.
pull the line off the rear and insert it into a bucket.start the truck and it should gush out like crazy.if not, your cooler(s) are probably plugged up.
how many miles/how much time did you run her at 280F? you might want to change the fluid.
i just checked your local weather.nothing silly.mid 80's.were you climbing monster grades?

The temp that morning was probably low 70's , 6% grade 15 miles last two miles @ 270-280* . Checked the fluid , no problem.
This part of Colorado is steep for long distances.
This was on my way to the black hills up through Cheyenne ...pretty much all mountains and passes. Same way coming home down through Nebraska's back roads... fun
