92 EB has blown two ignition modules, help!

Hey all,

Well usually I try to just help here, but this is a good one even for me. My sister called the other night and her 92 EB wont run right, coughing, sputtering and back firing just before dying. She lives to far away for me to diagnosis so she had a technician in her church help her out. He found that the ignition module was burnt up. He changed it out and immediately it burns up again. She called me up and I suggested to check all grounds, connectors and wiring for looseness and shorts. So far my friends and the dealership I used to work at have never heard of this and suggested to check the same things that I suggested to her.

Has any one here ever run into this problem? If so what did you find?

Thanks for any response in advance,

92 EB has blown two ignition modules, help!

Years ago I was working as a mechanic at an Amoco. I replaced the ignition module on a 89ish Escort. About a week later it came back with another bad ignition module so I replaced it and away it went. Another week later same thing, it was back with a bad module. Another mechanic told me to replace the coil along with the ignition module. When I questioned him he could not give me a good technical reason why. I replaced the coil and module and never saw the car again.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check into it. I got ahold of her and she said that the tech found a direct short of the middle of the three wires, so will see if that does it.

By the way, How does it feel to own the last of the 5.0's ever put into a Ford? I can't wait to off the 94 4.0 we have and to find a replacement with a 5.0!

I was looking to replace my 94 with of 5.0 for a while (Minnesota Rust) when I ran into the 2001 at a salvage auction (stolen recovered). I sold the 94 to pay for the Explorer Express Supercharger. You can imagine the difference in go between the two.
