Hi Guys, I just bought a rough 56 F 100. It came with 2 engines. The one in the truck has a separate big belt that drives the fan off the crank and the extra engine has a more conventional fan that bolts onto the water pump. The one in the truck has a very small carb which looks like a 1 barrel. The extra one has a holley 2 barrel that looks like a carb you would have found on a 70's 302, it also has a air cleaner with a 292 sticker on it. Also the spare engine has a 4 speed trans with a longer shift handle than the one in the truck. I also got a extra front clip that has different inner fenders. I assume that the extra parts may be off a bigger F series truck?? How can I identify these engines? Is there a number I can look for? I assume the one in the truck is a 272 and the extra is a 292.. I am still figuring out what I want to do with this truck. I would like to put a 300 six with matching 4 or 5 speed in it but I would like to keep the floor pedals and don't know how I could make a clutch work.. Any Ideas? Thanks for your input. Greg
Hey Kevin how just out of curiosity how can you tell it's a 53-55 frame, is the shock mounts ?
Yep the top shock brackets are a dead giveaway, also the high mount fan set up was not used on light duty 56 trucks but was used on 54 55 so my guess is this was a 54-55 running gear with a 56 cab put on it. Check the frame rail on the pass side top for the VIN number should start F10V
Also, do the running board brackets bolt on or are they riveted on? 53-55 bolt on and 56 are riveted to the frame.
The running boards are not on right now, but I'm thinking that my frame is not a 56 cause I have the same shock mounts, hopefully the cross member I got from u will fit, will find out during week
Your truck might be a 56 but I can tell that the frame is a 53-55
Yep, it is a 57 (heinz 57 that is..) The owner I bought it from told me of some "issues" . It appears the engine is a 55 239. I still havent found a vin #, but I think it is a 55 with a 56 cowl, windshield, roof and doors. It has the opening for a 55 gas tank also. It has bolted on running board brackets.

I am thinking I have a 55 w/ 56 cowl, windshield, doors, and top. I can see welds, apparently is was done a long time ago. I will try to find the vin. Thank for the info.
