So I was rebuilding my 292 with the intention of reusing the cam. The lobes and journals all looked good. I didn't notice the cam gear...at first.
Yeah, the cam is toast. Looks like particles from the broken gear teeth also damaged that last lobe.
So, now I'm in a quandary about what cam I want. The hot rod in me wants to put a lopey cam in it, but that means I'll have to modify EVERYTHING else and that'll get expensive real fast. I'd really like to keep it as affordable as possible. So, what do you guys recommend? Is there a better than stock performance cam that I can still use the stock 2-barrel carb? Also, it has the '57 ECZ-G heads on it.
While it would be best to "modify everything else" in order to optimize the engine for a bigger cam, something a little bigger than stock should be just fine with little modification. '57s were available with some pretty decent cams and since you have G heads, you are practically there.
Mummert's Y-265 or 270 would be good for a step or two above stock. An Isky E-4 would be good if it is used with a manual transmissions.
