Best obd tool/reader

Ok, I'm going to break down and buy an OBD tool for my 2004 F350 diesel. Any opinion on which is best? I don't want to spend over $200 unless there is a VERY good reason.

Thanks
Zeke

My opinion is you will have to spend more than $200 to get "The Best".
If not, I think you can spend considerably less than $200 for a decent generic OBD Code Reader.

Many will say https://www.autoenginuity.com/ is the best non-factory scanner. I got the factory NGS scanner. Both are a bit more than $200.

Lots use the Torque app with an inexpensive Bluetooth or WIFI OBD plug. This is considerably less than $200

I just got an ELM-327 wireless/bluetooth unit with the free Forscan software, and I gotta tell you, I'm pretty impressed. It could be information overload...or as one guy on the other site said, "Analysis Paralysis". It works with Windows, iXxx, and Android. The interface was only $20 or so bucks from Amazon. Not bad for what you get.

Writeup on OBDII monitors:

I plug for DashBoss and Edge Insight CTS. I have a ScanGauge and it's not used hardly ever.

That is a great write up that he did on the different monitoring devices out there.

Very much worth reading.

I use the Scangauge II as my daily driver.

I also have the Torque APP Pro. It does a better job on DTC's than SGII.

The downside for me on the Torque APP is getting it connected every time I got in the truck. Also, the time it takes to "Boot up". I would have missed my failing FICM. In the 10-12 seconds it takes for the Torque APP to boot, my FICM would read 47v.

I can't speak for DashBoss, but I would imagine it having the same delay.

Scangauge II is instant. It did catch the failing FICM. I could see it go from 40v to 48v. As time progressed, it got down to 30v. It would still only take 10-12 seconds to get to 48v. And once the engine was warmed up, the FICM read 48v the rest of the day.

I have the Xgauge DTC in it. And I check it from time to time to tell me if I have a "Soft Code" or not.

Does anyone know if the other three will show if there is a soft code appearing? A specific PID that can be set up on the screen?

Do you have gauges or any monitor?

I have a Scangauge and I like it for my needs, however I am not in a diesel.

I like my ScanGauge II. About $150 and can be used on more than just your truck.

That can be a good and bad thing. Don't know how many neighbors, relatives, friends, etc have hit me up to check or clear codes.
