Ive got a 1995 f150 4x4 4.9 e4od, handling package. I noticed hard Clunking when I put it in reverse. After some research, found that a common problem was the spider gears getting loose. I want to order some new parts and need to know my spline count. Can I find the spline count on the tag? my tag # is S837J
3L55 88 5A12
I've looked and looked and can not find anything on this. Axle code 19. I would hope to have th 31 spline count and Im not sure. Don't feel like opening it up until Im ready for repairs. There was also a blue sticker on the passenger side that stated 718371. There is also two holes drilled through the top right housing. Any recommendations on a aftermarket lockers?
Check the U joints first. Spider gears dont get lose. The spider gears are inside the carrier and have shims on the outside edge for the right gear spacing just like the ring and pinion. I bet you have a bad U joint. Go under the truck and grab the D/S and rotate it and it shouldn't have very much movement. If it does than look at the joints to see which one is lose.It would be a good idea to replace all the U joints if one is bad the other isn't far behind.
With the 3L55 on the tag the door code should read H9.
3L55 indicates 3.55 Limited Slip, 88 is 8.8 ring gear and 5A12 is Jan 12 1995
Oh, yes it is a 31-spline.
