I've read that you can't put 4.10's in a Ford 8.8'' diff (I currently have 3.55) without changing the carrier ... does this mean that once you change the carrier for the taller gears, that you've got a Ford 9'' diff? Or is that something completely different?
I had replaced the stock 3.55 gears with 4.10 gears a couple years ago on my "88 F150. It has an 8.8 rear and there was no need to change anything other than the ring and pinion and assorted worn parts. HTH -greg
last year I had to do that same thing. I was told that if i whent any lower than 373 I would have to change the carrier. To make along story short I ended up buying the hole ball of wax and since no shop would do it for me, I ended up doing the hole thing in the living room. But now that its done I still have second thoughts about not changing to a 9 inch when I had the chance.
good luck
The 8.8 doesn't have a carrier break. You can put whatever gears are available for it in there and not have to change the carrier. Perhaps the people that told you that were reffering to the front axle. The Dana 44 has a carrier break at 3.73.

Thanks for the information about the diffence between the 8.8 and the Dana 44; that clears things up a bit.
Where would you get the different carrier that would be needed for the Dana? I don't see much advertised for the Dana 44. Also, do the same gears fit the Dana as the 8.8? Again, I don't see gears advertised for the Dana 44.
I found the rear set at summit but if what cope said above is true then that to was a mistake. the front came from 4-wheel parts holesale I found there ad in petersons magazine, they now sell front and rears together as one kit. Also be sure to check and see if you need a reverse cut/rotation for your truck. I was told that there are 2 dana 44's and the reverse cut is for fords( dif on d-side.) I mention this because I found after I got the wrong stuff from summit. Thats when I checked out 4-wheel parts and found where I should have been ordering from the get-go.
You can find the different carrier at just about any mail order store that deals in gears; west coast differentials, randy's ring & pinion, reider racing, 4 wheel parts, etc. A new carrier shouldn't cost much, probably less than 40 bucks I would guess. Now would be the time to consider getting some sort of full carrier replacement traction aid, like a limited slip, instead of the regular open carrier. As for the question of whether the same gears will fit. Well, I'm not sure I know what you mean. If you mean can you get the same ratios, then the answer is yes. If you're talking about the same physical size then the answer is no. The dana 44 has an 8.5 inch diameter ring gear. The 8.8 has an 8.8 inch diameter ring gear. The pinion gears are also different sizes, but I couldn't tell you the dimensions right of hand.

One more thing to watch for if you do decide to do your own gear swap is to be careful when you get new bearings for the front dif. I ordered a dana 44 gear instal kit from summit and the inner pinion bearing in the Ford Case is different than the bearing included in most install kits. Go to the ford dealership and get an engineering number off of one of those bearings to make sure that its the right one. Its next to imposible to get that bearing back off the pinion if you do put the wrong one on. It'll fit over the pinion,,,but the race won't fit in the case. Also the dana 44 is a very popular axle, you should be able to find anything you want for one.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-May-02 AT 04:39 PM (EST)]That is good advice. I had the same exact thing happen to me, it made for a very frustrating day since I didn't realize it until everything was apart.
