I googled for a generic CAI on our V10 for a picture. I found this:

I don't know what cold air they are talking about...it draws air from directly under the hood. The stocker doesn't...it's the true CAI.

Filtering is not as good on a K&N. Pretty important with high flow (turbo) engines. AFE pro guard filter is decent, but very happy with the AIS filter.

Indepentendant lab testing has repeatedly proven that the Donaldson powercore media is superior at filtering dirt. If you are looking for an air filter that filters out the most dirt then there is a lot to be gained by putting on a better filter.
OP has V10, If you are generalizing your statement then I understand.

Agreed on the K&N filter's especially in a MAF setup which is what the OP's V10 Engine has. There is no AIS except on diesel platforms though.

Lmao @ zoodad increasing airflow. I do not have any test results to prove otherwise but I caution anybody thinking of zoodading their grill that if you drive on wet roads or in the rain or snow type condition having a straight shot inlet to your air cleaner can result in a wet and saturated air cleaner and has hydro locked more then 1 engine.

The stock intake inlet uses the grill as a barrier to keep water, snow and large debri out of the inlet and because the inlet is in a it is a high pressure area the section that the zoodad mod cuts out is not detrimental to your the air flow your engine requires. Ford didn't screw up when they designed the intake inlet and grill, some shade tree engineer who apparently had no clue about pressure differentials or consideration towards inclement operating conditions just figure a bigger hole directly in front of the inlet has to be better then a engineered hole because it looks like it would be.

There is no AIS except on diesel platforms though.

AIS is fords name for the air filter system that they offer for the 7.3 as an option that uses the Powercore filter media from the Donaldson company. On the 6.0 equipped vehicles they come from the factory with Donaldsons powercore filters already installed.

a company by the name of Volant who I was commenting on offers a filter for the v10 engine that is made from the same Powercore filter media manufactured by Donaldson.

So yes, I was generalizing. it doesn't matter what type of engine you have, gas or diesel. if it is an internal combustion engine you should be concerned with keeping as much dirt out of it as possible. my generalized comment was about the Donaldson filter media regardless of what brand name it is being sold as being superior to Oil gauzed filter media regardless of the brand name it is being sold as. so call it k&N vs AIS or AEM vs Volant you are comparing oiled gauze to donaldsons powercore

there are more Air filter companies then you can shake a stick at but there are really only 3 materials they use to make the filters out of.

1. paper
2. oiled gauze
3. powecore

Ram air isn't just a hole in the wind it is an engineered system of pressure differentials.

From wiki:
The ram-air intake works by reducing the intake air velocity by increasing the cross-sectional area of the intake ducting. When gas velocity goes down the dynamic pressure is reduced, while the static pressure is increased. The increased static pressure in the plenum chamber has a positive effect on engine power, both because of the pressure itself and the increased air density that this higher pressure gives.

We used the filter that came with our Banks Power Pack. I run a pair of Donaldsons in my semi though. I never looked to try to get a Donaldson for the EX. The ones in the semi, when compared to the Baldwin most guys run, you can see that there are more pleats with better looking media and the Donaldson is heavier. We haven't had any problems with the MAF due to the filter we're running.
