Air Fiilter.

Any point in doing a K&N vs just a regular paper filter?

No, you get a little better sound when you step on it but no other measurable gains in my opinion.

I had the Volant system on my previous Excursion, (2002 V10 Excursion) no more performance than the stock system and filter... again in my opinion.

Plus, the K & Ns don't exactly have a great reputation for actually filtering.

Zoodad mod is all you need. Stock filter is what I run, oil based filters and MAF sensors do not work well together and the K&N drop in filter I had did less filtering than it should have.

My cold air system produces a deafening drone at around 40 MPH.

I have a S&B setup on mine. I like the sound difference but I can not state whether or not there was a performance gain since I did several things at the same time.

Mine had a K&N when I bought it, kept screwing with the MAF. Went back to stock filter, never had the issue again.

You cut a 3" hole (more or less, I used a hole saw) through the fiberglass header behind the grill, Just in front of the air intake.

Stick with the stock filter, save the money in my opinion. I used to have the Volant on my 5.4 Expedition back in the day, not much to be had except for some noise.

Depends on which style of Volant you are talking about as they sell at least 2 styles of filters with completely different kinds of media.

1. Oiled gauze ( k&n style)
2. Donaldson powercore, ( OEM 6.0 and AIS style )

Indepentendant lab testing has repeatedly proven that the Donaldson powercore media is superior at filtering dirt. If you are looking for an air filter that filters out the most dirt then there is a lot to be gained by putting on a better filter.
