I just installed an EV2 40 PSI boost gauge from Riffraff, and I am reaching 14 PSI of boost at wide open throttle. This is without running any tunes or chip.
I had extensive work done by a shop on my 2003 Excursion, that I am now questioning there workmanship, and before I go back to them, I want to verify here first. Here is a list of things that have been done in the last 12 months:
-GT38R turbo with whatever wheel came with it, and waste-gate control solenoid
-Turbo Pedestal
-All intercooler boots replaced
-Up pipes
-Adrenaline HPOP
-6637 Air Filter (I added this)
14 PSI of boost seems low to me with a new turbo, and all related items tightened up What should I expect for turbo pressure? I am following @Tugly's advice and getting the engine solid before I go adding tunes to it.
I'm pretty sure that you are going to have to add more fuel in the form of tuning to see an increase in boost pressure. The 38r is capable of moving more air, but that doesn't mean it does it automatically.
Sounds like a wastegate adjustment fail - I did the same thing. Pop the red line off the wastegate actuator and cap the red line. This should be interesting.
I'm always pleased when I see people make efforts to get their trucks back to 100%. The results are always so much better than trying upgrades before the truck is whole. Good job!
I live in Michigan, probably at 500 feet above sea level. The boost gauge is plumbed into the AIH port with the part that RiffRaff makes. I have not tried to remove the red line, but I will repost results after I do so.
I have two questions.
1.) How do I adjust the wastegate? I did not know they are adjustable. I have thought about buying the diesel site manual wastegate control, the turbo master. Would this help?
2.) The green line that goes into the Garet silicone air intake boss, seems to fit loose. Is this supposed to be a tight fit?

Thanks Tugly. I have learned a lot reading your posts and responses! WOW is all I can say. I popped the red line off, and now I am boosting at 20 PSI. I told the shop before I believe the wastegate solenoid was bad, and they charged me $130 to tell me it was fine. Now what do I do? How do I adjust the wastegate? Do you need me to run any more tests? Is leaving the red line plugged bad?
I was referring to myself BUT... There's quite a few guys in the GR area. Stop by the BS thread in the Michigan chapter and I'm sure someone will jump up to help you out
I left my red line capped until I could exceed 35 PSI boost - then I hooked it back up to protect the intake/exhaust valves. We wouldn't want those opening precipitously, now would we.
I have seen 20 PSI boost on a stock truck, red line capped, and an AIS with no other mods. Same truck, bumped the exhaust to 4" and I topped off at 22 PSI boost - anything over that and the truck would defuel. 22-23 PSI is about max without a chip or a boost fooler - the type that regulates the pressure to the MAP line.
The adjustment for the wastegate is a turnbuckle on top. The hardest part of the whole job is to not lose the C-clip keeper. I parked a Mythbusters uber-magnet on top of the turbo while adjusting the wastegate, in case I dropped the keeper.
