Ok, so, I have read tons of threads and have referred to this particular site for some guidance or ideas and have an adventure of my own I need help with. I am currently undergoing a budget project on a 1977 ford f150 4x4 that came with a 400m under the hood. Now, I've always been a fan of the 460 because of the simple fact that it has so much potential. But, I am looking to budget rebuild a 460 carbed to a respectable 500-600 hp and relatively higher torque values. The catch, what upgrades to do and keep the overall cost of the engine down below 3500. Any tips?

No such thing as a 400M, it's just plain 'ol 400.
460's were not available with 4WD (or a M/T) until 1983, F250/350 only. 460 not available: in F100's after 1976, in cars after 1978, in F150's after 1979.
1983/97 F250/350 460 & 6.9L & 7.3L diesels have a hydraulic clutch, as do 1984/96 F150/250, Bronco 300/302/351W & 1984/97 F250/F350 351W
You'll have to buy aftermarket 460 4WD engine supports (aka towers/stands/perches) as 1973/79 F100/350 460 2WD; 1968/78 Passenger Cars; 1975/79 Econoline parts will not work.
