Can anyone tell me what would happen if I changed out my 351M 1978 Bronco's 15v 60 amp alternator with a 90 amp or even a 100 amp alternator?
If such a change to a larger amp alternator is safe for my 351M Bronco's 12v system, I'd like to purchase a chrome version as I begin adding chrome parts to the engine; however, the chrome versions I've seen are "rebuilt". Doesn't anyone make a brand new chrome alternator?
Absolutely no problem at all, as long as all the pulleys align correctly. There are some modifications you will have to make to the wires directly connected to the alt as the wiring currently in place probably can't handle the output of the newer alt.
Amperage changes are no problem. Voltage changes are a BIG problem. Overdriving circuits designed to run at 12 VDC will eventually damage wiring and exponentially shorten lamp life.
Well, I guess that answers that. Thanks Greystreak and Encho. I'll just stick to a 60 amp alternator since I don't know anything about the wiring change, which Encho said I'd have to do, and I don't want to burn up any other wiring, as Greystreak warned me about. If I can find a 60 amp chrome alternator, I'll settle for that.
