I am hoping someone can help me. I understand only the basics of automotive electrical systems. I have a 1978 Ford F150 pickup that has a 460 V8 with a stock 60 something amp alternator. The whole system is stock with an external regulator.
I am installing some high amp draw equipment and want to replace the stock alternator with a 180 amp alternator.
My only question is, do I need to replace the stock regulator? I understand that the regulator only senses voltage and I was thinking that I should not have to replace it. Am I correct? If not, what kind of external regulator do I need to replace the stock one with?
Thank you for any help.
Willie , If you acquire one of the newer, one-wire alternators, it should have an internal regulator------I don't know if "Summit" is banned but they carry a 140 amper that will function as a one-wire or you can hook it up with your existing harness and you don't have to change your old regulator if I remember correctly.........besure and tell them you want the "Black" model or they'll sell you the chrome model for an extra 100 bucks or so......fd
Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate your input but I've already got a 180 amp alternator and really can't afford another one. I was just wondering if my stock regulator is going to work with the 180 amp alternator.
Thanks
I would pony up the whooping $12 and go buy the proper regulator for your 180a alternator. You will have to splice it into your existing system more than likey, or make your own harnass. I would aquire wiring diagrams for the donor vehicle, and your truck to make the wiring job simpler. BTW, what did this alternator come off of??? Is it an aftermarket deal, or a remanufactured unit from the parts house?
