Crazy question

My windshield wipers only have one speed. And it's not very fast. Is this typical?

Single speed was standard, 2 speed wipers were optional.

The better question is how many remember driving a car from the 60's that had single speed wipers, much less two speed and much more less intermittent? I know one person in this thread knows first hand.

The even better question is...how many remember driving a vehicle that had single speed wipers w/a vacuum wiper motor?

Vacuum operated wipers work OK when driving on the flats or downhill, but when climbing a hill, the vacuum wipers slow down to a crawl, some even quit working.

This reminds me of when I got my first classic truck and I thought it didn't have high beams because the column turn signal wouldn't push forward for brights. My parents had a good laugh at my expense informing me of the high beam button. What made it worse was that I was 31 years old at the time.

The T/S handle never operated the low/high beams on any FoMoCo vehicle.

1980 was the first year that some cars have a lever on the column adjacent to the T/S handle that flips the low beams to high beams and vice versa.

1978/91 F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines with tilt wheel. Tilt wheel operates by pushing the T/S handle forward.

This lever was introduced in 1992 F150/350, Bronco & Econoline. Previous years had the dimmer switch on the floor.

Oh do I remember those days, especially driving in these mountains on a rainy day, procedure would be to apply the gas until no longer able to see then let up and allow the wiper to make a couple of sweeps then apply the gas, this process would continue until reaching the top; however, they did not work much better going down hill, no coasting.

Originally had a single speed wiper in the 65 and swapped for 2 speed and seem to recall it was an easy swap.
