My neighbor had his trans go out on his 2001 f350 diesel. He cuts and bales hay for me so I offered to help him out. I would be replacing it on the ground am I getting in over my head? I worked in automotive for almost 10 years but I have never taken a trans out on the ground before. Any tips or things to watch for would be appreciated. Thanks.
If it's a 4x4. Take off transfer case first then take out transmission. I have done it both ways. I found it easier to split them.
I disagree with that one. I find it much easier to balance the tranny WITH the T case bolted to it.
It depends on the quality of your jack for sure. If you just have a $50 transmission ATTACHMENT to a regular jack - it'a a way harder job than investing even $100 in a crappy harbor freight tranny jack.
I agree with MSG. I found it easier to keep them together. What I did was used a ratchet strap on the back of the transfer case and a trans Jack. Once freed up from the engine a friend of mine steadied the back from outside the truck holding the far end of the ratchet strap. Kinda hick I know but couldn't have gone any better
I've done it both ways. My truck was also lifted 8" on 38s too so having room underneath wasn't a problem
Make sure you are on level ground. If this is a dirt spot, put down sheets of plywood underneath and to the side you will pull the tranny, to roll the jack on
